The Cantonment Board St.Thomas Mount cum Pallavaram established in the year 1774, is the second oldest Cantonment in the country. It is located 18kms away from the Central Railway Station. The total area of Cantonment is 2892.82 acres. It is basically divided into three locations namely St.Thomas Mount, Meenambakkam and Pallavaram. It comprises of some prominent places like the St.Thomas Mount itself, which is a sacred place of Christians where St.Thomas, who was one the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who was martyred in this Mount, the Anna International Airport, and the Officers Training Academy, the only Army Training Institution in the country to offer training to Short Service Commission.
There are 62 Cantonments in the country which are located in 16 States and National Capital Territory of Delhi.
1.Cantonment Board are Statutorily constituted corporate bodies and consist of elected representatives besides ex-officio and nominated members. The Station Commander, who is a military officer, is the President of the Cantonment Board.
2. Cantonment Boards are local bodies constituted under the provisions of the Cantonments Act 2006. These are under the administrative control of the Government of India in the Ministry of Defence. As per Section 45-A of the Cantonments Act, every Board shall, as soon as may be, after the close of the year, submit to the Central Government, through the Officer Commanding-in-Chief, the Command, a report on the administration of the Cantonment during the preceding financial year.
3. GOC-in-Chief of the Army Command concerned acts as the local Govt. for the Cantonments situated within his Command. The administration of the Cantonments is supervised by the Defence Estates Organisation.
